RIVER Magazine

Articles

Here, we explore ideas like reality vs. representation; usefulness, contribution, and value; art as meaning rather than product; underconsumption and enoughness; agency in a passive age; and more, as the questions keep unfolding.

At its core, this is a culture and art magazine about meaning, usefulness, and staying human in an increasingly inhuman world.

We’re creating this space to explore culture not only as it is, but as it could be. We approach culture from unusual angles, asking better questions and trying to spark thoughtful reflection about how we might live more meaningful lives; and maybe even make the world a little better along the way.

This space is for thinkers, doers, artists, and anyone curious about culture and how we shape a life of meaning together.

You can expect things like:

  • Several weekly essays and works on culture and community

  • Thought experiments and philosophical reflections

  • Practical ideas for living a more meaningful life

  • Insightful posts delivered straight to your inbox (if you subscribe)

RIVER Magazine is not here to produce more content. The world is drowning in content.

We’re not content creators. We’re context creators. We’re here to create context. To gather scattered ideas and place them in relationship. To slow the feed down long enough to ask: What does this mean? Why does it matter? Where does it fit? We’re stewards of meaning, architects of perspective, and curators of a way of seeing that helps people stay human in a world that would rather keep them scrolling. We curate not for volume, but for coherence. We connect threads. We identify patterns. We build thought frameworks that help people see clearly in an age of distortion. We’re not about chasing trends or feeding algorithms; we’re about cultivating discernment.

Social media is addicted to reaction, we choose reflection.

At RIVER Magazine, the wind behind our work is the human desire for meaning and fulfillment. And we believe that the hunger is real; and increasingly unmet in a culture saturated with volume. So we’re restoring context to the stream of ideas and experiences that flood our lives. We examine them. We weigh them. We reconnect them to lived reality.

Substance is the test.

If an idea cannot carry weight, if it cannot endure beyond reaction; then it cannot satisfy the deeper human longing for meaning. We’re not here to add to the volume. We’re here to measure it; and to build what lasts.

I’m RIVER

I spend my time thinking, writing, building, and paying attention. I work alongside nonprofits to help design programs and strategies rooted in community, reciprocity, and real human connection. I also take photographs and write essays; often as a way of slowing down and making sense of the world as it is, and as it could be.

You can read more about my philosophy and approach to community building, social capital, meaning, and nonprofit leadership HERE.

I’m the founder of KommunityKoin.com; a time co-op platform centered on participation and mutual support, Kula.today; a web app to promote community participation, and TheNamedGallery.com; a small online gallery devoted to art as meaning rather than product.

If I have a singular mission, and I’m not always sure I do, it’s to encourage people to show up for one another, to participate in community, and to live in ways that feel useful, grounded, and real.

I publish works here regularly. They tend to grow out of everyday observations, cultural questions, and quiet moments of reflection. This space is more of a living notebook than a business, at least for now, and it will likely remain free for the foreseeable future.

I’m glad you’re here.

Cheers, friends.
